Landscape painter, instructor, and author Mitchell Albala

For more than 30 years, I have been a dedicated landscape painter and teaching artist. My atmospheric and semi-abstract landscapes have been exhibited nationally and are represented in corporate and private collections.

I am the author of two best-selling books on the subject: Landscape Painting: Essential Concepts and Techniques for Plein Air and Studio Practice (Watson-Guptill, 2009), which has over 60,000 copies in print; and most recently, The Landscape Painter’s Workbook: Essential Studies in Shape, Composition, and Color (Rockport Publishers, 2022), which is currently the #1 selling book on landscape in the nation.

In addition to teaching plein air workshops in Italy, I also teach in the Pacific Northwest at Winslow Art Center, Pacific Northwest Art School, Dakota Art, and (from 1998–2018) Gage Academy of Art. I am also a mentor with the online mentoring community Mastrius.
